What is The 75?

The 75 is a grassroots coalition, founded on November 11, 2024, with the mission of ending the system of legalized corruption in America through a constitutional amendment explicitly stating, “corporations are not people and money is not speech.” We believe the American public is generally not fully aware how political corruption was legalized.

Our objectives include: 1) educating and raising public awareness to make this the kitchen table issue, 2) inspiring change through coalition building, social media campaigns and connecting resources, and 3) empowering a new generation of legislators to run for office on the money-in-politics issue.

How did the American political system legalize corruption?

No, it was not always this way. The process for campaign financing currently in place, and in practice, within America was completely illegal during the first half the 1970’s and prior. In 1975, America actually had the strictest campaign finance laws in place in its entire history. Amazingly, these laws were put in place through overwhelming bi-partisan congressional votes in both 1971 and 1974, reflecting public opinion.

The new laws, established with remarkable unity amongst political parties, would still be in place if not for a few Supreme Court split decisions. In the split decisions, the majority went against decades of precedent to the contrary and received fierce dissenting opinions. The SCOTUS split rulings that legalized political corruption in America without a single vote ever being cast, include:

1976 – Buckely v Valeo in a 5-4 ruling SCOTUS struck down limits on independent expenditures, campaign finance spending, and a candidate’s own contributions.

1978 – First National Bank of Boston v Bellotti decided 5-4 ruling that corporations like individuals have a protected right to free speech under the first amendment.

2010 – Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruled 5-4 laws preventing corporations and unions from using their general treasury funds for independent “electioneering communications” (political advertising) violated the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech.

The split decisions by SCOTUS in these cases legalized corruption in America.

Why is getting big money out of politics an important issue?

The short answer, money-in-politics is the root cause of significant issues facing America today. The legalized bribery through “campaign contributions” and “independent expenditures” has decimated representative government. Under the current system, politicians represent their donors, not the American people, therefore it does not matter what the majority wants, it only matters what the people with the largest checkbooks want. Getting the money out of politics will return the government to the American people and reinstate a representative democracy forcing politicians to listen and follow the will of the voters in order to stay in office.

How will The 75 achieve its mission?

Achieving our mission of a constitutional amendment stating “corporations are not people and money is not speech” won’t be easy, but it is absolutely possible. Here’s how:

  1. We get your support. It starts with the American people. Over 75% of Americans agree that corporations, industries, lobbyists, special interest groups, and billionaires have too much influence over elected officials.
  2. We get support from elected officials, from Donald Trump to the newly elected state legislators. Donald Trump has run on “draining the swamp” which will result from enacting the People’s Amendment.
  3. We educate Americans on the big money-in-politics issue by presenting the history, the interconnectedness with many societal issues, and by offering resources to further their knowledge.
  4. We inspire Americans to Stand Up, Speak Up, and Look Up with social media, community, and branding campaigns. We make big money-in-politics the kitchen table issue.
  5. We empower Americans to run for office in every race going forward on this core issue, providing resources, a framework, and how-to support for grass root candidates.
  6. We vote out politicians not aligned with our mission and change the system from within the system by passing and enacting the People’s Amendment.
  7. We will keep a relentless pursuit of the mission, with Heart, Honor, and Respect. Failure is not an option, our Country and our future is depending on us all.
